Introduction to Supportive Psychotherapy by Arnold Winston, M.D., Richard N. Rosenthal, M.D., and Henry Pinsker, M.D. is the Book of the Month for Psychiatry Online in September.
This is a volume in the series Core Competencies in Psychotherapy, Glen O. Gabbard, M.D., Series Editor. The series addresses the competencies now required for psychiatric residents. From American Psychiatric Publishing's description: "One of five volumes in the groundbreaking Core Competencies in Psychotherapy series, this remarkable clinical guide will be a trusted resource for how to do supportive psychotherapy. Extensively detailed clinical vignettes are woven into each aspect of supportive psychotherapy discussed in this concise yet comprehensive work.
"In nine informative chapters, the authors cover the basic principles of supportive psychotherapy, clarifying the placement of supportive psychotherapy in a continuum of supportive to expressive psychotherapy that corresponds with the extent and level of a patient's psychopathology. They detail the general framework of supportive psychotherapy, including indications, phases of treatment, beginning and ending sessions, professional boundaries, therapeutic relationship issues (e.g., transference, countertransference, therapeutic alliance), and self-disclosure guidelines."

Two new textbooks have also been added to the PsychiatryOnline site: the familiar Textbook of Psychiatry is now available in its 5th edition (c.2008) and the 4th edition of The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Substance Abuse Treatment has also been posted.

Science Direct and Scopus will be down for maintenance this weekend. The following notice was received from Science Direct: "From 05:30 EDT (04:30 am local) on Saturday August 2, to 01:30 EDT (12:30 am local) on Sunday August 3, ScienceDirect and Scopus will be unavailable due to an upgrade of the administrative system that will improve the access and entitlements process to both platforms.
As a consequence, Email alerts and RSS feeds for ScienceDirect and Scopus will not be sent from 11:30 EDT on August 1 (10:30am local) until the downtime has finished. Email alerts and RSS feeds can still be created until 05:30 EDT on August 2 (4:30am local), but they will not be sent until after the upgrade is completed.
One of our largest back-end upgrades, the new system will cater to your needs in what is now a more complex scientific community due to increasing internationalization and cross-border collaboration.
The main tangible benefit for you and your users will be simplified access to Scopus and ScienceDirect. For instance, individuals will have single login details for access to all of their entitled content regardless of access point. We apologize for any inconvenience this downtime may cause you and look forward to offering you this superior service in the future."
Thank you for your patience during these scheduled enhancements to Science Direct and Scopus.

A new video is available for viewing from NCME TV.
The new title is "Best Practices for Blood Management," taught by Aryeh Shander, MD, FCCP, FCCM, Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology, Medicine, and Surgery, Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
NCME TV's description of this program: "Potential adverse effects of blood transfusions range from immunomodulatory reactions to infections with blood-borne pathogens. In addition to these health risks, issues of blood shortages, blood storage, and high costs make alternatives to transfusion even more attractive. In this timely and authoritative video, Dr. Shander explores strategies to markedly reduce the need for transfusions, such as optimizing the perioperative hemoglobin level through the use of pharmacologic agents, preoperative autologous blood donation, acute normovolemic hemodilution, and meticulous hemostasis and operative techniques. In addition, he discusses steps hospital teams can take toward developing cost-effective blood management programs for their own institutions."
