Holiday Hours for Thanksgiving

The HAM-TMC Library will be closed on Thursday November 26 in observance of Thanksgiving Holiday.

The Library will be open on Friday November 27, from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Regular hours resume on Saturday November 28.

*No reference services will be available on Friday.

L. Maximilian Buja, M.D named Executive Director of the HAM-TMC Library

L. Maximilian Buja, M.D., executive vice president for academic affairs at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, has been named executive director of the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center (HAM-TMC) Library by the Library's Board of Directors, effective Dec.1. Dr. Buja has served on the Library's Board for the last nine years, with one year as the Board Chair.

"The staff of the HAM-TMC Library and I are very excited to have Dr. Buja as our new director," said Deborah Halsted, M.L.S., M.A., the library's interim executive director. "He has offered the HAM-TMC Library valuable leadership for many years as a board member and as chair of the library's Board of Directors. I envision extensive growth in our services during his tenure."

"I am gratified by the confidence placed in me by the members of the Board of Directors who represent major institutions in the TMC," Buja said. "The HAM-TMC Library is a unique institution that has enhanced the stature and reputation of the TMC and its member institutions by providing invaluable intellectual resources to physicians, scientists, healthcare providers as well as the public."

"My vision as executive director is to provide leadership in accelerating the transformation of the HAM-TMC Library into a world-class and world-recognized biomedical information center at the forefront of the 21st century's electronic knowledge and communication revolution, while at the same time maintaining the traditional strengths and service commitment of the library," Buja said.

Some National Library of Medicine Utilities Unavailable Sat. Nov. 14

Due to the need for electrical maintenance at the National Library of Medicine, some NLM sites will be unavailable during the day through late evening on November 14th. Systems expected to be down: DOCLINE, Loansome Doc, LocatorPlus, HSRProj, HSRR, UMLS KSS, and Images from the History of Medicine. PubMed and all other Entrez databases will be up; ClinicalTrials.gov, DailyMed, MedlinePlus, TOXNET, the NLM Catalog and NLM Gateway will also remain available during performance of this maintenance.

PubMed Redesign is Launched

Yesterday the new PubMed interface debuted successfully. The simpler-looking and quite differently designed interface appears at first to represent substantial change, but all the features are still present. For an overview of what has been changed, see the NLM Technical Bulletin articles here and here. Users who frequently search PubMed will notice that setting up a "My NCBI" login is becoming increasingly desirable.

Science Direct down for maintenance

Elsevier has informed us that Science Direct will be unavailable due to scheduled maintenance for approximately 8 hours from 8pm Central, Saturday, October 31, to 4am Central, Sunday, November 1st. Science Direct journals will not be available at this time. The publisher apologizes for this inconvenience. Thank you for your patience while Elsevier completes this scheduled maintenance on the Science Direct platform.

New NCME TV Program Release- No. 884

Program No. 884, "Gender Differences in Acute Coronary Syndromes Care and Outcomes" was released recently by NCME TV. This program, taught by Christopher P. Cannon, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School, deals with the differences in coronary disease manifestation between the sexes and addresses effective assessment techniques and treatment approaches for female patients with ACS (Acute Coronary Syndromes.)

NCME is approved by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. All NCME programs are certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ on an hour-for-hour basis. (Some individual programs are supported by educational grants from industry.) Ejournals will be unavailable Oct.24

Our electronic resources link provider, Serials Solutions, will be upgrading their systems Saturday, Oct. 24, at 2:01 am, to improve speed and reliability of service. As a result of this upgrade, access to ejournals will be unavailable for a period of time. Downtime across the global system could last two to six hours, but Serials Solutions predicts a maximum of three for our local area. Thank you for your patience while the provider completes this upgrade.

Revised USMLE Steps 2 and 3 Medical Subjects Question Banks

Dear Customer:

We are pleased to announce that we have revised Exam Master’s USMLE Step 2 and Step 3 Medical Subjects question banks.

To ensure that you have a better and more focused study opportunity, we have removed the Basic Sciences topic from both of these question banks.

This revision makes both of these question banks more pertinent to your studies.

Many of the Basic Science questions that were removed from the USMLE Step 2 and Step 3 Medical Subject question banks are available in our Medical Subject Review set of question banks, comprising over 6000 Basic Science questions. You will still find these questions useful for general studies or as a Basic Sciences refresher. Both the USMLE and the Medical Subject Review resources are available on your institution’s Exam Master OnLine gateway.

ACS Web Editions Journal Access Restored

Online access to the ACS Web Editions collection has been restored for our educational level users. The Library's 2009 subscription has been reinstated and will continue for subsequent years. Access from remote locations outside the Library has been tested and confirmed. Date adjustments for ACS titles should display in our ejournal portal by noon tomorrow. Science Direct and SCOPUS Weekend Down Time Scheduled

SCOPUS and Science Direct will be unavailable due to scheduled maintenance between approximately 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Central Daylight Time on Saturday, Sept. 19th. The publisher extends an apology to our users for the inconvenience caused.

New Library Fees

Effective October 1, the HAM-TMC Library will increase the fees for the following services: photocopy, interlibrary loan and computer search services. Additionally, the Library will begin charging for booking the classroom and conference rooms. A fee will also be charged for custom installation software in the classroom or the conference room.

New NCME TV Program- No. 833

NCME TV has released "Is It Delirium or Dementia? How to Differentiate and Manage the Two Common Age-related Conditions." Taught by Jay Lombard, DO, Chief of Neurology at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital and Clinical Asst. Professor of Neurology at Cornell University Medical School, this 60-minute program "reviews the pathophysiology, etiology, and clinical characteristics of each of these conditions, and provides the latest evidence-based treatment approaches to effectively manage patients presenting with delirium and/or dementia."
