- Descriptions: 1000 Genomes: a deep catalog of human genetic variation "...is the first project to sequence the genomes of a large number of people, to provide a comprehensive resource on human genetic variation... The goal of the 1000 Genomes Project is to find most genetic variants that have frequencies of at least 1% in the populations studied." 1000 Genomes is an international endeavor, with participants from institutes, government and universities all over the world. "DNA from the samples will be available for researchers to follow up with more detailed studies of variation in particular regions. The cell lines will allow researches to study cellular phenotypes such as gene expression, epigenetic patterns, and drug response. The extensive genotype data available on the samples, and the trio samples for some of the populations, will allow researchers to map regions of the genome computationally that affect the cellular phenotypes, and to study the heritability of these phenotypes."

- Descriptions: AGRICOLA (AGRICultural OnLine Access) is a catalog and index to the collections of the National Agricultural Library, and a primary public source of global agricultural information. Covers materials in all formats and periods, including printed works dating back to the 15th century.
The records describe resources for agriculture and allied disciplines, including animal and veterinary sciences, entomology, plant sciences, forestry, aquaculture and fisheries, farming and agricultural economics, extension and education, food and human nutrition, and earth and environmental sciences.
AGRICOLA itself does not contain the text of the materials cited, but thousands of the records are linked to full-text online documents. Updated daily. For materials not linked, see the Help text on Requesting Materials.
AGRICOLA is organized into two bibliographic data sets: the NAL Online Public Access Catalog contains citations to books, audiovisuals, serials, and other materials from the Library's collection, along with some records for items not held by NAL. The Article Citation Database includes citations, many with abstracts, to journal articles (see Journals Indexed in AGRICOLA), book chapters, reports and reprints.
Each data set can be searched separately, or the two may be searched as one database.

- Descriptions: The Center does basic research in the fields of bioinformatics and systems biology. A multidisciplinary group of scientists works in ten specialist research areas (see the CBS Map) and is one of the largest such groups in European academia. Datasets, software, a publications list, useful links and more are included here. "While the first wave of computational research at CBS focused on sequence analysis,
where many highly important unsolved problems still remain, the current and future needs will concern sophisticated, large scale integration of extremely diverse sets of data: gene sequences and their control regions, gene expression profiles, protein-protein interaction networks, temporal knowledge on protein complex formation, and signaling cascades... Integrative approaches will form the basis for advanced, quantitative and qualitative types of systems biology, where simulation and modeling will be key for the understanding of the complex dynamics of entire cells, organs or organisms."

- Descriptions: Sources of information in many diverse disciplines are retrievable with Google Scholar. A search can return citations to articles, theses, books, patents, abstracts and court opinions from academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories, universities and the Web itself. Scholar ranks your search results according to the full text of each document, its place of publication, its author, and the frequency/currency of its citation by others.
Choose this link if you are registered with The TMC Library as an Academic (Educational) user, to access available full text by clicking the "Find It" text.
Even with an individual, independent Google Scholar registration one can set persistent preferences, among them the convenient option to display The TMC Library's holdings at title level (and/or those of other libraries.) In either case, the "Advanced Scholar Search" page allows restriction of your search results to a particular date range, subject area, author or journal.
This link is the one to choose if you are not a registered TMC Library E-Resources user and if you are not a member of a TMC academic institution.

Methods Navigator provides a time-saving structure for life scientists that facilitates search, retrieval and application of correct laboratory methods. Drawing on content from Methods in Enzymology, Methods in Cellular Biology, and more than 40,000 articles from 15 primary and methods journals (all published by Elsevier,) Methods Navigator also includes 120 of the most commonly-used protocols. The database combines multiple taxonomies into a single ontology to search across these resources (organized into 60,000 topics) for the methods and protocols you need.
Individual (free) registration allows you to bookmark materials for quick retrieval from a personal storage area called MyMethods. Protocols can also be downloaded to computer and opened with Word; users are free to edit them and upload the changed documents into MyMethods, from which point they can also be shared with other Methods Navigator users.
Accessing "Help" opens a pop-up window with Help contents and (see top menu) a link to a short 3-part video tutorial. Scopus users will notice many familiar search and filtering features in Methods Navigator.

- Descriptions: A few years ago, Nature.com began a fluid collection of interactive portals covering certain scientific disciplines-- neuroscience, proteomics, human signaling pathways, laboratory technologies and protocols, climate change and so on. Each active portal features news, conferences and papers on various facets of the discipline, information on protocols and approaches to research, new research technologies, data-sharing, contact information and recent publications in various areas of current interest to researchers. The ultimate aim of these portals seems to be not to provide a free service to scientists, but to gauge whether there is enough participation and interest to justify Nature's launching a new journal covering that area of science; when conditions are favorable, that is done, and the portal is no longer open for new activity.

- Descriptions: NextBio Basic is a free web application for searching biomedical and genetic information. It provides access to a 'curated, correlated database' of public data into which NextBio integrates Medline literature, clinical trial information, and news. Its semantic framework is based on gene, tissue, disease and compound ontologies. Registered users (registration for this basic version is free) can personalize their experience, communicate, collaborate and share data with the rest of the NextBio community. For the registered user, a single search for a gene yields quick results arranged by category: an overview of the gene; a list of tissues in which the gene is expressed; diseases and compounds relating to the gene; a list of the top associated researchers and authors; literature, associated clinical trials, and more. NextBio provided the infrastructure for combining several Elsevier products onto one search platform, SciVerse Hub.

- Descriptions: SciVerse is an integrated search of Scopus and Science Direct that returns its results in context view- within the sentence, or at paragraph level. Search refinements will be familiar to Scopus users, with both limits and exclusions available. A display in the right-hand sidebar shows the top ten authors who have published most prolifically in the chosen query topic, according to the results list. Possibly the most valuable and innovative features of SciVerse is Applications, an area devoted to providing access to complementary tools, both free and fee-based, for downloading. Most applications are independently developed and the majority are search enhancements (tapping into government data sets, for instance) and refinements.

- Descriptions: The SCOPUS database contains millions of records from 10,150 life and health sciences publications (including all journals contained in Medline and EmBase) and includes most other sciences and humanities-- coverage of 20,450 journal titles. SCOPUS also indexes the proceedings of 750 conferences. Each search pulls in relevant Web resources, sequestered under a separate tab. Another tab separates a set of patent results from U.S., U.K. and worldwide patent offices. SCOPUS includes a Journal Analyzer tool that graphs journals, singly or for comparison, from 1996 to present, showing total citations, number of articles published, total citations divided by number of articles, and the percentage of non-cited articles. A search by affiliation is provided. The free login for authorized users provides additional advantages: a personal profile, with space to save lists of citations and track authors; a publication alerts service; and direct export to RefWorks, each with the user's own settings.
