- Descriptions: 1000 Genomes: a deep catalog of human genetic variation "...is the first project to sequence the genomes of a large number of people, to provide a comprehensive resource on human genetic variation... The goal of the 1000 Genomes Project is to find most genetic variants that have frequencies of at least 1% in the populations studied." 1000 Genomes is an international endeavor, with participants from institutes, government and universities all over the world. "DNA from the samples will be available for researchers to follow up with more detailed studies of variation in particular regions. The cell lines will allow researches to study cellular phenotypes such as gene expression, epigenetic patterns, and drug response. The extensive genotype data available on the samples, and the trio samples for some of the populations, will allow researchers to map regions of the genome computationally that affect the cellular phenotypes, and to study the heritability of these phenotypes."

- Descriptions: AGRICOLA (AGRICultural OnLine Access) is a catalog and index to the collections of the National Agricultural Library, and a primary public source of global agricultural information. Covers materials in all formats and periods, including printed works dating back to the 15th century.
The records describe resources for agriculture and allied disciplines, including animal and veterinary sciences, entomology, plant sciences, forestry, aquaculture and fisheries, farming and agricultural economics, extension and education, food and human nutrition, and earth and environmental sciences.
AGRICOLA itself does not contain the text of the materials cited, but thousands of the records are linked to full-text online documents. Updated daily. For materials not linked, see the Help text on Requesting Materials.
AGRICOLA is organized into two bibliographic data sets: the NAL Online Public Access Catalog contains citations to books, audiovisuals, serials, and other materials from the Library's collection, along with some records for items not held by NAL. The Article Citation Database includes citations, many with abstracts, to journal articles (see Journals Indexed in AGRICOLA), book chapters, reports and reprints.
Each data set can be searched separately, or the two may be searched as one database.

A multidisciplinary group of scientists works in ten specialist research areas (see the CBS Map) and is one of the largest such groups in European academia. Datasets, software, a publications list, useful links and more are included here. "While the first wave of computational research at CBS focused on sequence analysis,
where many highly important unsolved problems still remain, the current and future needs will concern sophisticated, large scale integration of extremely diverse sets of data: gene sequences and their control regions, gene expression profiles, protein-protein interaction networks, temporal knowledge on protein complex formation, and signaling cascades... Integrative approaches will form the basis for advanced, quantitative and qualitative types of systems biology, where simulation and modeling will be key for the understanding of the complex dynamics of entire cells, organs or organisms."

- Descriptions: "Open Science - Open Data - Open Peer Review." F1000 Research is an alternative model for scientific publishing and peer review. Peer review is open, attributed, and done post-publication, once a work has been submitted to a brief internal F1000 review and posted. F1000 strongly encourages publication of accompanying datasets under the most liberal of Creative Commons licensing terms. Citations contain information on the stage of refereeing and approval of references.

- Descriptions: A few years ago, Nature.com began a fluid collection of interactive portals covering certain scientific disciplines-- neuroscience, proteomics, human signaling pathways, laboratory technologies and protocols, climate change and so on. Each active portal features news, conferences and papers on various facets of the discipline, information on protocols and approaches to research, new research technologies, data-sharing, contact information and recent publications in various areas of current interest to researchers. The ultimate aim of these portals seems to be not to provide a free service to scientists, but to gauge whether there is enough participation and interest to justify Nature's launching a new journal covering that area of science; when conditions are favorable, that is done, and the portal is no longer open for new activity.

- Descriptions: NextBio Basic is a free web application for searching biomedical and genetic information. It provides access to a 'curated, correlated database' of public data into which NextBio integrates Medline literature, clinical trial information, and news. Its semantic framework is based on gene, tissue, disease and compound ontologies. Registered users (registration for this basic version is free) can personalize their experience, communicate, collaborate and share data with the rest of the NextBio community. For the registered user, a single search for a gene yields quick results arranged by category: an overview of the gene; a list of tissues in which the gene is expressed; diseases and compounds relating to the gene; a list of the top associated researchers and authors; literature, associated clinical trials, and more. NextBio provided the infrastructure for combining several Elsevier products onto one search platform, SciVerse Hub.

- Descriptions: The NCBI Structure Group, a part of the Computational Biology Branch of NCBI, developed this suite of four free molecular and protein databases, each of which is itself made up of several others, and all of which can be searched individually. Macromolecular Structures, Conserved Domains, Small Molecules, and Biological Systems are the four main resources here- tools designed to facilitate discovery of sequence, function and structure associations. The tab labeled "Discover" does a good job of explaining how to use the Structure databases and how to access various facets of information on a molecule or protein from any point in NCBI's many resources.
