Library Cards & Privileges

Anyone who comes to the HAM-TMC Library is welcome to use the books, journals, and other information resources of the Library. However, a HAM-TMC Library card is required to borrow materials. To obtain a card, download and complete the library card application, print it out, and then submit it at the Library Circulation desk. Be sure to bring identification verifying eligibility. (Viewing the application form requires Acrobat Reader).

Eligibility for Free Full-Member Cards

In general, faculty, students and staff from Participating and Supporting Institutions of the Houston Academy of Medicine - Texas Medical Center Library, as well as members of the Harris County Medical Society are eligible for free HAM-TMC Library cards. Bring your institutional identification badge to the Circulation Desk to obtain your card. Cards must be renewed yearly to insure uninterrupted service. 

Health care providers who are not cardholders can receive some privileges through the Library's role as the Regional Medical Library for the South Central Region of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine .Please call the Circulation Desk 713.799.7147 for more information.

Free Consumer Cards

  • Consumer library cards are free to anyone with Texas issued identification.
  • These cards can be used to check out consumer books and videos only.
  • They do not provide other library services such as interlibrary loan or remote access to electronic resources.
  • Fines are $1.25 per day per item.
  • Books check out for 3 days; videos, for 3 days, no renewals.

TexShare Card

TexShare - A Texas Library Resource Sharing Program
Created by the 73rd Texas Legislature, the goal of the TexShare Consortium is to "increase the intellectual productivity of students and faculty by sharing access to vast amounts of information available in the state, but not owned by local libraries." With 53 public university and health science center members and $1 million in funds trusteed to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the TexShare Consortium has formidable collective buying power and achieves great economies of scale. As an active TexShare member, the HAM-TMC Library can provide its clientele with free access to business and general periodical databases with 750 publications included in a fulltext format. The TexShare Library Card Program is a significant step toward a statewide library card system. For more information, inquire at the Circulation Desk 713.799.7147.

HARLiC Card

Houston Area Research Library Consortium
If you are a faculty member, graduate student, resident, fellow, or medical student, you qualify for a borrower's card from the Houston Area Research Libraries Consortium (HARLiC). A HARLiC card entitles you to borrow items from Houston Public Library and the libraries of Rice University, Texas Southern University, Texas A & M University, Prairie View A & M University, and the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. You may apply for a HARLiC card at the Circulation Desk. If you are not eligible for a HARLiC card you may be able to obtain a TexShare. See TexShare .
