THE JESSE H. JONES COMMUNITY HEALTH INFORMATION SERVICE


The Jesse H. Jones Community Health Information Service offers a library of health books, pamphlets and videos on numerous medical conditions. A librarian is available to help you locate information Monday - Friday from 9:00-5:00, or by appointment. When a librarian is not available, the consumer library remains open and is a self-service area. We provide the following services:
  • FREE health information delivered to you via regular mail, email or fax
  • TRAINING on local and national consumer health databases
  • UP-TO-DATE collection of books, videos, brochures and pamphlets on medical topics
  • DEDICATED area for doing research, video viewing, and computer research
  • LIBRARY staff trained in providing consumer health information and medical reference
  • INFORMATION on in-depth health topics as well as quick reference questions
  • FREE library card for checking out consumer health materials
  • A VARIETY of consumer health materials in languages other than English

GO LOCAL TEXAS GULF COAST


Go Local Texas Gulf Coast is a consumer health joint website project between the Jesse H. Jones Community Health Information Service of the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library and the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Moody Medical Library in partnership with the National Library of Medicine. By using this resource you will be able to: Find up-to-date information about local health resources for 38 counties in the Texas Gulf Coast region, and by linking to MedlinePlus, find reliable health information about a number of diseases and conditions. Our website is created and maintained by professional medical librarians, so you can trust the quality of information you receive by using Go Local Texas Gulf Coast.

HEALTH INFORMATION KIOSK PROJECTS


The Health is Wealth electronic touch-screen kiosks are located at: Forthcoming:
  • Texas Medical Center International Visitor's Lounge, International Terminal, Bush Intercontinental Airport
The paper brochure kiosks are located at: The kiosk contains numerous health brochures in five languages: Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, and English, on topics such as diabetes, hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, immunization, and nutrition. Brochures are accessed via touch-screen and printing of brochures is free of charge. The Health is Wealth kiosk is sponsored by the Jesse H. Jones Community Health Information Service of the HAM-TMC Library and the Asian American Health Coalition of Houston and is funded by the Friends of the Texas Medical Center Library with a gift from the Burlington Resources Foundation and Tammy Tran, Houston Attorney. The kiosk is a continuation of the Consumer Health Information for Asians project, which began providing health informational paper brochures in Chinese, Vietnamese and English in 2000.

CONSUMER HEALTH OUTREACH


We are available to promote health information for consumers/patients in the Texas Medical Center and surrounding counties. Outreach activities include free classes and participation in health fairs to promote free National Library of Medicine consumer health resources. Recent outreach projects include:
  • Access to Electronic Consumer Health Information Award to place 3 computers with free printing in the Library of the Vietnamese Civic Center, 11360 Bellaire Blvd., Ste. 880, Houston, TX 77072
  • Express Outreach Award to place a computer with free printing at the Chinese Community Center, 9800 Town Park, Houston TX 77036
  • Express Outreach Award to place a computer with free printing in the waiting area of the HOPE Clinic, 7001 Corporate Dr., Ste. 120, Houston TX, 77036
  • Express Outreach Award to promote Go Local Texas Gulf Coast to Texas school nurses
